There was Magic on Main Street

Main Street Collierville and title sponsor, First State Bank, joined to offer another holiday celebration on Collierville’s Historic Town Square with Magic on Main Street Movie Night and 2nd Annual Chili/Chowder Cook-off on Friday, December 7.

As the sun set on the square, the holiday lights began glowing offering the most picturesque scene: brightly lit trees, children running and playing, families and friends gathered in conversation. The line for the carriage ride, sponsored by Terri O’Connor of John Green Realtors, grew longer as children anticipated what might be their very first horse drawn carriage ride. You could smell the hot chocolate the Kiwanis was preparing. In the background, dropped from the gazebo, was a movie screen showing images of Collierville adorned with snow. Slowly the crowds positioned themselves on the bleachers and in their chairs brought from home. Though unseasonably warm for December, blankets were draped lightly across the laps of many. Then the magic begins. From the screen began one of our favorite holiday films, “It’s a Wonderful Life.” First State Bank passed out bell necklaces with flashlights to all the little ones so when that special moment came in the movie, they could ring their bell.

“It was an honor for First State Bank to be a part of the “Magic on Main Street” movie night,” stated Brenda Hood, Vice-President and Branch Manager of First State Bank. “As a long time resident of Collierville, I’m always amazed at the wonderful things Collierville has to offer.”

Inside the Depot, the judges gathered to begin tasting the entries for the cook-off: Senator Mark Norris with his wife, Chris; Aldermen Maureen Fraser, Stan Joyner, and Tom Allen; and Kimberly Nyberg. Edgar Hershberger won first place for the Chili; Tony Sarwar won first place for Soup with the Su Casa Classic Chicken Tortilla Soup and he also won first place for the Fino Villa Seafood Creole Gumbo which fell in the “other” category. The entries by Tony Sarwar were donated to Page Robbins and Collierville Education Foundation to raise funds for their organizations during the movie. Each organization raised over $100.00.

Of course the “magic” wouldn’t be possible without the support of the Town of Collierville, Collierville Parks and Recreation and Public Works. Special thanks also to The Collierville Herald, Office Depot and Pepsi Americas who always proudly support Main Street Collierville.

If you missed the opportunity to stop briefly for the holidays just to enjoy the “magic,” make it a date for next year. For more information about Main Street Collierville, their events, and how you can become involved, visit their website at www.mainstreetcollierville.org.
