Nancy Bassett Receives 2007 Preservation Achievement Award

Nancy Bassett of Collierville was presented with the 2007 Preservation Achievement Award by the Tennessee Preservation Trust for her tireless efforts in the production of the newly released pictorial history book by Main Street Collierville, Images of America: Collierville. The award is given to those who deserve special recognition for their work in preservation at the local level.

Mrs. Bassett has long been involved with Main Street Collierville and historic preservation. In 2002, Mrs. Bassett brought a project to the attention Main Street Collierville Executive Director, Laura Todd. The project began with a call to the community to share historic photographs to be preserved and used in a pictorial history book which would be published at a later date. The project, a little over four years in the making, came to an end in January 2007 with the publication of Images of America: Collierville.

This publication not only captured the photographs that otherwise might have been lost treasures in a box stashed away in an attic. But, the book has captured the ambience of a turn-of-the-century Collierville. The selected images feature the following areas of the Collierville community: Town Square, townspeople, sacred places, places of learning, places of work, architecture, and treasures lost. This publication will be a keepsake of the Collierville community by learning about its past through photographs of places, people and events long gone, buildings lost or replaced in changes of time, sites and sights that can live on again in the imagination.

The book project, chaired by Nancy Bassett, was a true labor of love. Mrs. Bassett spent countless hours pouring over photographs, researching history for the text of the book as well as producing the layout of the book.

Nancy Basset receives the 2007 Tennessee Preservation Trust Preservation Achievement Award from William Kennedy, Southern Advisor for the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
