National Tourism Week Celebrated in Collierville
During the month of May, the focus turned to tourism as National Tourism Week was celebrated May 12-20 in
Tennessee and throughout the nation. This year's theme, "Travel and Tourism: America’s Front Door," offers
an image of to people that they are welcome to visit and discover America.
Tennessee's parallel theme, "Tourism: Tennessee's Front Door," illustrates the importance of travel to Tennessee's image and
provides a platform to discuss its role in bringing growth and new business to many sectors of the economy. Additionally it
provides a great opportunity to showcase the tourism industry's 12.4 billion dollar economic impact. The Department of
Tourist Development, along with tourism partners, will heighten awareness of this state's thriving industry with several events.
Marty Marbry of Tennessee Department of Tourist Development joined Main Street Collierville for the May 15th luncheon meeting
of the Metro Memphis Attractions Association which was held at the historic train Depot in downtown Collierville. Mrs. Marbry,
the West Tennessee Regional Manager, discussed the new campaign by Tennessee to promote tourism in the educational setting
as a potential field of study for future tourist leaders. Mrs. Marbry made a reference that a career in a medical field
can be applied aboard a cruise ship, in NASCAR or even at theme parks. Laura Todd, Executive Director of Main Street
Collierville stated, "Mrs. Marbry offered some valid points that there are many opportunities for our youth and future
careers in tourism. It is important that we market these fields to them."
After the presentation, the group of 38 leaders from area businesses related to tourism enjoyed lunch aboard The Tennessean
Restaurant. The trip to Collierville's historic Town Square was complete with shopping at area merchants.
