Pennies For Preservation

Main Street Collierville began Pennies for Preservation in 2003 with a simple goal: allow children in the community an opportunity to contribute to preservation efforts. Since then, over $3,500.00 has been raised to assist in the funding of the Battle of Collierville marker, the Heritage Education Fund and placement of historic church markers.

Each year area schools are asked to have their students and faculty participate in the collection of loose change for a period of time during May, National Preservation Month. Schools sometimes use this as a small competition between classrooms and even the schools compete with each other. Loose change is collected daily and then turned over to Main Street Collierville. In 2006 a traveling trophy of a train bank was created to be placed at the school which collected the most money. Each year this trophy will be presented to the outstanding school at the annual Teacher’s Appreciation Luncheon in August.

This year was no exception in the outstanding support shown by area elementary schools. Tara Oaks Elementary, Bailey Station Elementary, Collierville Elementary, Sycamore Elementary and Crosswinds Elementary schools participated in this years’ “Pennies for Preservation” collection effort raising a total of $1390.52. For the fifth year in a row, Tara Oaks Elementary collected the most funds by raising $566.18. Phyllis Agnew of Tara Oaks Elementary who was instrumental in school collection was presented the “traveling award” by Main Street Collierville’s Executive Director, Laura Todd, during the 2007 Collierville Education Teacher Appreciation Luncheon. First Tennessee’s Mike Brannock assisted Mrs. Todd with the presentation. First Tennessee of Collierville is instrumental to the collection process by sorting and counting the change each year. “It was a joy to work with the schools in their efforts to raise money for Main Street Collierville” stated Tamara Swain, Vice President/Financial Center Manager, First Tennessee of Collierville. Bailey Station Elementary collected $227.49; Sycamore Elementary collected $219.94; Crosswinds Elementary collected $194.15; and Collierville Elementary collected $192.76.

This year’s collection along with the last two year’s collection will be used to fund markers for the historic churches surrounding the Square. Funds are also used to fund the Collierville Education Foundation grant program. A portion of funds raised is placed in a special grant to the Collierville Education Foundation. This grant makes available funding for teacher’s grants which directly relate to historic preservation.

The Pennies for Preservation program itself received recognition from the Tennessee Historical Commission as a recipient of the 2007 Certificate of Merit Awards which recognizes Tennessee individuals and groups who have worked to preserve Tennessee cultural heritage. “Historic places enrich our communities in so many ways and we’re thankful to those people and organizations that give of themselves to preserve Tennessee’s heritage,” said Patrick McIntyre, Executive Director of the Historical Commission. “From our unique landmarks, to beautiful revitalized downtowns and time-honored neighborhoods, the enormous contributions historic places provide to Tennessee are worth celebrating, and the people who work to help protect these special places are worth recognizing.”
