Main Street Collierville Celebrates National Preservation Month
Citizens in Collierville, Tennessee will join thousands of individuals around the country as part of a nationwide
celebration of 2007 National Preservation Month in May 2007. "Making Preservation Work!" is the theme of the
month-long celebration, which is sponsored annually by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
Since the National Trust created Preservation Week in 1971 to spotlight grassroots preservation efforts in America,
it has grown into an annual celebration observed by small towns and big cities with events ranging from architectural
and historic tours and award ceremonies, to fundraising events, educational programs, and heritage travel opportunities.
Due to its overwhelming popularity, the National Trust has extended the celebration to the entire month of May and
declared it Preservation Month to provide an even longer opportunity to celebrate the diverse and unique heritage of
our country's cities and states and enable more Americans to become involved in the growing preservation movement. The
first official Preservation Month was observed in 2005.
Main Street Collierville will observe National Preservation Month 2007 in several ways. With an early kick-off in mid-April,
area elementary schools and preschools have been asked to participate in the annual "Pennies for Preservation"
fundraiser. "Our organization encourages students, teachers, and administrators to bring in any loose change," stated
Laura Todd, Executive Director. "This year’s funds as well as last years will be used to assist in the purchase of markers
for the historic churches. Two of the four markers will be purchased this year."
During the entire month of May, Main Street Collierville, with sponsor Banyan Tree Realtors, will display historic
photos from the newly released book,
Images of America: Collierville, at the Collierville Burch Library. Other Main
Street Collierville items can be viewed inside the library at one of the front display cases. A book signing for the
Images of America: Collierville book will be held during the Fair on the Square on May 5 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at
The Brooks Collection. Visitors can meet those who helped put together this must-have Collierville book!
This year will feature a very special opportunity with Two Flags of Tennessee. On May 11th at 10:00, Collierville,
chosen as one of 39 sites across Tennessee, will experience history in the making as an 1861 Stars and Stripes and
the First National Confederate flag, the Stars and Bars are raised again. The ceremony will be held at the corner of
N. Rowlett and Main Street next to the cannon display and will include a regiment band along with Wigfall Greys Sons
of Confederate Veterans musket salute.
The annual Preservation Awards, sponsored by The Tennessean at the Collierville Train Museum, will be held on
May 18th at 9:00 a.m. aboard The Tennessean. Area residents and businesses will be recognized for efforts in
preserving the Collierville historic district as well as the schools who participated in the "Pennies for
Preservation." The 2007 Spirit of Giving Award will also be presented to an individual whose focuses their
efforts towards preservation, promotion and protection of the Collierville historic district.
The month long activities will end with Bluegrass & BBQ held on May 24 and 25. This fundraising event sponsored
by The Rotary Club will offer smoked butts for $30.00 ... perfect for the Memorial Day weekend! Preordered butts
can be picked up at the Main Street Collierville office between 12:00 and 3:00 p.m. both days. During these times,
visitors to the square can enjoy the bluegrass sounds of Brush Arbor Bluegrass and Savannah Bluegrass. Orders can be
placed by calling 853-1666.
